The Village Hall & Playing Fields Committee (‘VH&PFC’) is made up of a group of volunteers who take on responsibility for managing and maintaining the playing field in the centre of Church Broughton and organising fund-raising, recreational and social events in the village. We are in fact the organising body of a registered charity which was first set up in the 1930s when the playing field was bought by public subscription: more details about this history and the formal status of the charity is on the ‘History’ web-page.
Despite the name, we do not have a village hall and have only the one playing field in the centre of the village to look after. Our main functions therefore are:
- the provision of the playing field as public open space and as a community recreation area with children’s play equipment; and
- The organisation of village events, either using the playing field itself or hiring other premises such as the local school.
The funds raised by us are used to support these activities and to provide insurance cover, without which the general use of the playing field and the organisation of village events might cease. The insurance cover which we take out also provides some public liability insurance for other social and recreational organisations in the village which have registered their ‘affiliation’ to the VH&PFC’s general charitable purposes: see the ‘Affiliated Organisations’ web-page.
As a central undeveloped space, open for public access at all times, the playing field is an integral part of the village environment. Not only is it available for casual use all year round but it also provides a fine venue for village events.
Raising funds and the continued provision of the open space and play equipment is important to us. However, equally important in our view is the fostering of community spirit and social life for the village through the regular activities and events which make Church Broughton such a special place and community in which to live: see the ‘Chairman’s Report’ web-page. Both these aspects of the VH&PFC require ideas, time and community effort. Anyone is welcome to volunteer to join the VH&PFC and, even if not able to join us ‘full-time’, assistance in organising, setting up and running events is always needed. But it is not all work: we actually have an enormous fun in doing all this!
New blood is welcome! And support for our events is crucial to their continuation!
If you would like further information, or would like to help in the running of the VH&PFC or any event, please contact any member of the Committee.
The recreation field and the play equipment is regularly inspected, repaired and maintained as necessary. However please contact any member of the Committee if you notice anything of concern.
N.B. The football field adjacent to Church Broughton School and the tennis court on the central playing field are not part of the VH&PFC’s property or responsibility.
